Julie Trigg – Artist
Julie Trigg studied art and printmaking at The Art Students League, the Parsons School of Design and The New School in New York City. She also studied watercolor and oil with Sarasota-based artist Nike Parton. “I credit her with teaching me how light affects color and how there should always be an element of truth in your work,” says Trigg. Julie received numerous top awards for her work in Florida, Pennsylvania and New York, including the Grumbacher Silver Medallion Award, first place in the National League of American Pen Women show in Miami and was selected to exhibit in Edison College’s “30 Florida Women in Art.” In 2008, her work was included in the NFS – Collection of the Artists” show, curated by Mark Ormond for the Art Center Sarasota. Trigg’s paintings are in many private and public collections, including the state capitol.
For the past 10 years, Julie gone back to oils. She is still doing statement and political pieces. Her paintings, whether depicting cows, horses or dogs, are never about what they seem and usually require the viewer to bring something to the table. “I don’t always choose my subjects. Sometimes they just slam into me and I feel I have to put them down. And yes, sometimes they’ll express my dark side. Most successful artists, whether they’re painters, poets or musicians, usually have a dark side they visit now and then.” – Julie Trigg says.
Julie has multiple ways of starting a painting. Sometimes she starts out by sketching or doodling in her sketchbook. If she thinks a sketch has possibilities, she’ll do a rough sketch on her canvas with a charcoal vine, working out the composition, then dust most of the lines off before starting in with color. Sometimes she actually comes up with the title of the piece first and try to make it happen on the canvas, usually working on several pieces at the same time.
For years, Julie Trigg painted landscapes en plain air. However, today she usually only sketches outside, making color notes before she starts a new piece in the studio. Then she forgets about all the rules and just concentrates on pushing the imagery, color and texture.
Julie Trigg’s artistic heroes who inspired her work are Edgar Allan Poe, Egon Schiele, Chaim Soutine and Paula Modersohn-Becker.
